He noticed a strong
labialization for /a/, and an even more acute
labialization for /o~/.(42) Fonagy observed a thorough reorganizing of all French nasal vowels, perceiving a shift of /[??]/ towards /a/, but hesitating between merging and shift for /a~/ and /[??]/.(43) Walter, Montagu, and Carignan have all come to the conclusion that a vowel shift has outdated the current IPA representation for French nasals.(44) They all agree that /[??]/ is pronounced with lips more rounded and more protruded than /o/, midway between /o/ and /u/.

(191) Several cases of

labialization and palatalization, as well as laryngeal modifications, such as aspiration and glottalization, can play a contrastive role in segment inventories.
Labialization: Substitution of a labial consonant for an alveolar or interdental consonant (e.g., /[eth]e/ produced as [ve]).
Both lip protrusion (
