The
hystricomorph rodents, such as paca (Cuniculus paca), agouti (Dasyprocta sp.) and other wild mammals, serve as animal protein sources for local rural communities (Valsecchi, El Bizri, & Figueira, 2014; Van Vliet et al., 2015), which usually leads to overhunting in the Amazon.
The guinea pig (Cavia porcellus, Caviidae, Linnaeus, 1758) is a
hystricomorph rodent, widely used as animal model for research development, especially that related to placentation (Miglino et al., 2004; Mess, 2007) and development of embryonic membranes (Oliveira et al., 2012; Vasconcelos et al., 2013), which have been studied by members of our research group.
A new species of whipworm from a South American
hystricomorph rodent.
Mountain lion predation may be higher in CSP compared to Yellowstone National Park (Barnowe-Meyer et al., 2009) because the mountain lion population in the Black Hills is restricted to a relatively small island of forested habitat, the, predators do not compete with other apex predators such as wolves or grizzly bear, and there is a diverse prey assemblage consisting of white-tailed deer, mule deer, elk, bighorn sheep, mountain goat (Oreamnos americanus), and pronghorn as well as smaller prey including porcupine (
Hystricomorph hystricidae) and wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) available to predators.
Nutria (Myocastor coypus) are large
hystricomorph South American rodents adapted to semi-aquatic environments (Gosling 1981).
The capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris Linnaeus, 1766) is a large semi-aquatic polygynous New World
hystricomorph rodent (Macdonald, 2006; Oliveira and Bonvicino, 2006).

Hystricomorph rodents.
We have observed that the progesterone values reported here were similar to many
hystricomorph rodents, as reported previously for the Cavia porcellus (Croix & Franchimont 1975), Hystrix africaeaustralis (Van Aarde 1985) and Agouti paca (Montes & Baz 2006).
The coypu or nutria Myocastor coypus (Molina, 1782; Rodentia, Myocastoridae) is an
hystricomorph rodent native to southern South America (Parera, 2002).
