Anaemia of inflammation is a result of hypoferremia due to increased activity of hepcidin concentrations which results in sequestration of iron in macrophages.
IL-6 mediates hypoferremia of inflammation by inducing the synthesis of the iron regulatory hormone hepcidin.
Inflammation and infection induce HEPC expression, likely explaining the hypoferremia that accompanies chronic inflammatory conditions [6].
(23) found a positive correlation between prohepcidin level and sTfR1, and between hepcidin and ferritin in 45 healthy postmenopausal subjects, suggesting that prohepcidin may be associated with hypoferremia or erythropoiesis, and that hepcidin may be a marker of iron overload.
However, amongst the different factors responsible for their mutual coexistence like dilutional hypoferremia, poor dietary iron intake, increased iron demands, and/or impaired iron absorption, a chemical called hepcidin was recently found to be the main culprit for ID or IDA in obesity.
