floating dock

1. A structure that can be submerged to permit the entry and docking of a ship and then raised to lift the ship from the water for repairs. Also called floating drydock.
2. A dock that is held in place laterally, as by pilings, but rests on floats and is free to rise and fall with changes in the water level.
