7) are suggestive of a sclerophyll-dominated evergreen woodland and include Nothofagus (Brassospora-type), Gymnostoma, epacrid Ericaceae and species of Cunoniaceae and Sapindaceae (Ferguson et al., 2010; Jordan et al., 2010).

This evidence, in combination with the presence of taxa such as very small-leaved epacrid (Ericaceae) species (Jordan et al., 2010), strongly implies the existence of a richly diverse, relatively open, sclerophyllous community during the Oligo-Miocene of New Zealand, and provides evidence for such a community in a region that now does not have any Proteaceae-rich habitats.

However, the epacrid resprouters achieved only one-third the shoot:root ratios during comparable periods of growth and accumulated much more root starch reserves than did the reseeders.
