The divalent cation [Ca.sup.2+] in gypsum is more strongly held to many of the cation exchange sites than [Na.sup.+], so added [Ca.sup.2+] displaces [Na.sup.+] from exchange sites and it can leach down the profile with the added S[O.sub.4.sup.2-]--as a
counterion. Thus, with gypsum addition there is an immediate decrease in ESP due to Ca addition followed by a slower increase, as Na is leached out of the profile.
Being three variables studied at two levels, plus the variables average values, nine experiments, for each
counterion (acetate and chloride), were performed combining those parameters.

The PCPs of surfactants, such as critical micellar concentration (CMC), the degree of ionization, and thermodynamics of micellization depend on the nature of the hydrophobic tail, hydrophilic head group, and the
counterion species [12].
This conversion is indicative of formation of electrostatic bond which requires the transfer of
counterion from one polymer to another.
The reason for this might be due to the effect of the
counterion, chloride.
IR (KBr, v, [cm.sup.-1]): 3233 and 3138 (N-H stretch); 1620 and 1587 (C=N/C=C quinazoline group stretch); and 1096, 1062, and 623 (perchlorate
counterion).
[C.sub.18], despite the presence of a
counterion in the mobile phase, did not properly retain the analyte (data not shown) that was eluted with the dead volume.
However, both proteins are missing the glutamate
counterion at the two homologous canonical positions in a true "opsin" protein (stars in Figs.
