Work is being undertaken to install a new electric
conductor rail on the direct railway line between Cardiff and London.
The rigid
conductor rail will be suspended from the tunnel roof, rather than fixed directly to it.
Collector shoes (contact blocks), fitted under the tram, make contact with the
conductor rail, providing electric traction power to the tram.

Foltz said long-term plans call for retrofitting the Garden City Terminal's fleet of diesel-powered RTGs to use shore power via retractable arms which will link to a
conductor rail system, bringing the total number of ERTGs to 169 by 2022.
