Stradivari

Inspired by the Louvre in Paris, it comprises more than 3000 rooms as well as a collection of stringed instruments made by the fabled Antonio Stradivari.

Angelo van Schaik reports.Back in the 17th century, Antonio Stradivari traveled for two days from his hometown Cremona to the Paneveggio forest in Northern Italy to locate the perfect wood for his instruments, which would become world famous.

That, plus his personal fortune, has allowed him to put together a stunning collection of vintage musical instruments including priceless violins by Stradivari, Guarneri, and Amati that are now on display at the museum, in an exhibition that recreates the workshop of a master luthier or violin maker.

"I believe in Kaohsiung, we have the possibility to have a new Stradivari for the orchestra and conductors, so we are really excited to try this new instrument," Dodds said, referring to the famous violins made by Antonio Stradivari.

The so-called "Ames" Stradivarius -- named after a previous owner -- "is one of the most fantastic examples of the late work of Antonio Stradivari; it's a large instrument, so it needs somebody who is strong yet gentle to play it," said Bruno Price, the co-founder of Rare Violins.

Guitarist Mark Knopfler described his introduction to Monteleone this way: "It was like meeting Stradivari!" (the great crafter of string instruments who died in the eighteenth century).

Academy alumna Maya Anjali Buchanan was recently awarded a Stradivari Society violin, and is one of the youngest recipients in the society's history.

THINK of the great violin makers and the names of such Italian craftsmen as Stradivari, Amati and Maggini may spring to mind.
