Egyptian army officer and politician who served as prime minister (1954-1956) and president (1956-1958 and 1961-1970) of Egypt and as president of the United Arab Republic (1958-1961). His nationalization of the Suez Canal precipitated an international crisis (1956).

A lake of southeast Egypt and northern Sudan. It was formed in the 1960s by the construction of the Aswan High Dam on the Nile river. The rising waters of the lake submerged many historic sites.

He was one of the leaders of the coup that deposed King Farouk (1952) and became premier (1954). His nationalization of the Suez Canal (1956) led to an international crisis, and during his presidency Egypt was twice defeated by Israel (1956; 1967)
