Born on the Moreau River in South Dakota about 1840, a member of the Hunkpapa Sioux; won distinction as a warrior and was adopted by Sitting Bull; opposed, with Red Cloud, the construction of the Powder River army road (the old Bozeman Trail) in actions near Fort Phil Kearny, notably the Fetterman Fight (December 21, 1866) and the Wagon Box Fight (August 2, 1867); an opponent of the Fort Laramie Treaty (1868), he refused to live on a reservation and joined the tribes gathered at Sitting Bull's great encampment on the Little Bighorn River, Montana; as Sitting Bull's principal war chief he led the counterattack that cut off Maj.
