Eight captured species represented 97% of our total captures, with Hodgson's red- toothed shrew (Episoriculus caudatus) 58%, lesser striped shrew (Sorex bedfordiae) 13%, long-tailed mountain shrew (Episoriculus macrurus) 8%, strip- blacked shrew (Sorex cylindricauda) 6%, south China field mouse (Apodemus draco) 4%, Chinese shrew mole (Uropsilus soricipes) 3%, Chinese mole shrew (Anourosorex squamipes) 2%, and PAre David's Chinese vole (Eothenomys melanogaster) 2%.
Newfound hantavirus in Chinese mole shrew, Vietnam.
Sequence analysis of the full-length medium segment and the partial small and large segments of a hantavirus, detected by reverse transcription-PCR in lung tissues of the Chinese mole shrew (Anourosorex squamipes) captured in Cao Bang Province, Vietnam, in December 2006, indicated that it is distinct from rodentborne hantaviruses.
A forest-dwelling soricine typically residing at elevations of 1,500-3,000 m, the Chinese mole shrew (family Soricidae, subfamily Soricinae) has a vast geographic range, extending from western and central People's Republic of China, northern Myanmar, northern Thailand, Assam, Bhutan, northern Vietnam, Taiwan, and possibly Lao People's Democratic Republic.
Yanagihara, unpub, data), the Asian house shrew in India (1,2), and the Therese shrew in Guinea (4)--the detection of a newfound hantavirus in the Chinese mole shrew would predict that hantaviruses harbored by shrews are as geographically widespread as those harbored by rodents.
To further investigate the existence and phylogeny of nonrodentborne hantaviruses, we analyzed lung and other visceral tissues, collected in RNAlater Stabilization Reagent (QIAGEN, Valencia, CA, USA), from 24 soricomorphs, including 9 white-toothed shrews (Crocidura spp.), 3 Chinese mole shrews (Anourosorex squamipes), and 12 longnosed moles (Euroscaptor longirostris), captured in northern, central, and southern Vietnam during November and December 2006.
Viruses closely related antigenically to Hantaan virus have been isolated from the Asian house shrew (Suncus murinus), greater white-toothed shrew (Crocidura russula), and Chinese mole shrew (Anourosorex squamipes) (10-12), which suggests that shrews are capable of serving as incidental hosts for hantaviruses typically harbored by rodents.
In addition, hantaviruses isolated more than 2 decades ago from the greater white-toothed shrew (Crocidura russula) (38) and Chinese mole shrew (Anourosorex squamipes) (38) in Sichuan Province, People's Republic of China, have been inadequately characterized.
