A new species of the snailfish genus Paraliparis (Scorpaeniformes:
Liparidae) from the eastern Bering Sea.
The mechanosensory system of the lateral line in the Scorpaeniformes order, has been studied in taxa like
Liparidae (Chernova & Stein, 2004; Lanoo et al., 2009), Cottidae (Jones & Jansen, 1992; Telcean et al., 2005; Coombs & Grossman, 2006), Hexagrammidae (Wonsettler & Webb, 1997) and Normanichthyidae (Mandrytsa, 1993).
Morphological divergence between two color mor photypes of Crystallichthys matsushimae (Cottoidei:
Liparidae).
(2010a, 2010b) investigated the ossicles of the Cottidae, Cyclopteridae and
Liparidae (Scorpaeniformes) and SEM imaged the taxonomically important tooth plates and gill raker tubercles of these fishes.
The scales and their modifications in pleuronectiforms are easily distinguished from comparable ossicles in teleosts we studied earlier (Cottidae, Cyclopteridae,
Liparidae, Gasterosteidae, Syngnathidae), though there are interesting comparisons between the spined and lateralline scales as well as tubercles of pleuronectiforms and cottiforms (cf.
For seine and trawl catches, unidentified small flatfish (Pleuronectidae), gadids (Gadidae), pricklebacks (Stichaeidae), and sculpins (Cottidae) were counted in the total catch, but were not considered separate species for species richness calculations because at least one identifiable species from these taxa was captured; unidentified small snailfish and unidentified small poacher were considered separate species because no identifiable species from the families
Liparidae and Agonidae were captured.
It is likely that members of the families Zoarcidae and
Liparidae also exhibit parental care, but this has not been confirmed.
Snailfishes (
Liparidae) have some features, such as large eggs, low fecundity, the laying of eggs in sheltered locations with the use of the female ovipositor, and possibly the protection of clutches in species having a large sucking disk (Rass, 1950; Stein, 1980; Chernova, 2014), that are similar to features of the smooth lumpsucker, but members of
Liparidae have not been studied in detail.

Liparidae.
