Salehi was quoted by the Mehr news agency as telling reporters last Wednesday that during the visit "we discussed possibilities of Iran's joining ITER, and the other members welcomed a prospective Iran membership."

ITER is a planned, next-generation fusion research facility for international research involving seven international partners: China, the EU, India, Japan, Korea, Russia, and the US.

Its first step will be an initial transfer of unused funds of EUR400 million from other EU budgets to ITER. The Commission said it would also request an additional transfer of money later this year when negotiating next year's EU budget, starting with detailed talks with MEPs and ministers in November.

Established to develop a new, cleaner, sustainable source of energy, ITER Organization has become one of the largest and most ambitious worldwide science projects ever conducted.

ITER confirmed last week that a meeting in June would bring forward a revised schedule which will postpone the "first plasma" when the reactor is switched on, from November 2018 to November 2019.
