(hûr′kyə-lā′nē-əm) An ancient city of south-central Italy on the Bay of Naples. A popular resort during Roman times, it was completely destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius (ad 79). Important ruins have been unearthed since the early 1700s.
