(ə-lĕp′ō) also A·lep (ə-lĕp′) A city of northwest Syria near the Turkish border. Inhabited perhaps as early as the sixth millennium bc, Aleppo was a key point on the caravan route across Syria to Baghdad and later a major center of Christianity in the Middle East.
