At the COP 26 Climate Summit in Glasgow, India set an ambitious target of attaining net-zero emissions by 2070 and a 45% reduction in the emissions intensity of its GDP below the 2005 levels by 2030. The transport sector holds responsible for 14 percent of energy-related CO2 emissions, and it also accounts for 70 percent of total diesel consumption and 100 percent of gasoline consumption.

Accounting for around 15% of total vehicular movement, urban freight activities contribute significantly to the local air pollution, as commercial vehicle segment is largely dependent on conventional fuels. With rapid increase in freight activity, well-planned efforts toward achieving net-zero emissions target by 2070 are crucial.

Promoting 15000 Improved Cooking and Women-led Entrepreneurship in Bihar

The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) in collaboration with the Bihar Rural Livelihoods Promotion Society (BRLPS-Jeevika) has been promoting clean cooking and lighting solutions in the backward districts of Bihar among women's self-help networks for over a decade and a half. The establishment and operationalization of women-led energy entrepreneurship is the cornerstone of the programme that only disseminates the relevant technology solution but also provides aftersales service in rural and remote areas.

The model involved setting up Uttam Urja Kendras or Solar Marts that are run by Women Energy Entrepreneurs (WEEs) who are mostly members of local self-help groups. The WEEs are trained and supported in business-related activities such as awareness generation, marketing, product demonstrations, after-sales service, etc.

Solar-biomass hybrid dryer with thermal energy storage

TERI has developed Solar-biomass hybrid dryer with thermal energy storage for rural tribal communities, women and differently-abled persons. The integrated system has a Thermal Energy Storage (TES) device and a Biomass-based Heat Exchange (B-HE) system. These components are integrated with a solar dryer developed by SEED for continuous operation and efficient utilization of the hybrid system in food drying and increasing the capacity utilization factor of the system.

The system has a loading capacity of 50 kg of fresh produce per batch. The hybrid dryer system is equipped with a controller developed by TERI for controlled and energy-efficient drying operations. The electrical energy requirement of the system is less than half a unit for 10 hour operation.

Climate Change and Health: Review of Evidence for the Indo-Pacific Region

The Indo-Pacific region is grappling with climate-induced shifts in weather patterns, characterized by rising temperatures and increased precipitation. These changes are contributing to a surge in respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, vector-borne illnesses like dengue, and mental health disorders. Projections indicate that adverse weather incidents in the region will intensify, leading to increased occurrences of heatwaves, floods, and droughts; and further aggravating existing environmental challenges. This escalation poses a serious threat to human lives as well as decades of progress in development, global health, and poverty reduction.

The populations at risk are extensive, particularly in small island nations and coastal areas with dense populations. Alarmingly, 42 million people in the Asia-Pacific region have already been displaced due to climate-related factors such as storms, floods, extreme heat, and rising sea levels, leading to significant internal and cross-border migration.
