Expand your audience and maximize your impact

Taylor & Francis is a leading global publisher of open access (OA) books and chapters. This content is freely available online so anyone, anywhere can read, download and share it under a Creative Commons license.

All our open access book content is hosted on our eBooks platform as well as sent to OAPEN, DOAB, and other dedicated OA book platforms to ensure the widest possible reach. We have over 4,000 pieces of open access book content listed on OAPEN since joining in 2017 and usage data shows that this is accessed from around the globe.

Why publish open access?

Publishing OA ensures your work is freely accessible to readers, increasing its visibility, engagement, and citation potential while also complying with possible funder requirements. A new study on the impact of open access (OA) on eBook usage from Taylor & Francis shows that the effect is even greater than previous studies have shown.

We’ve got you covered with everything you need to get started:

  1. Step 1: Create your book proposal

Your OA Book proposal should follow our standard proposal template. Read our book proposal guidelines.

  2. Step 2: Send us your book proposal

Once your proposal has been completed, email it to one of our expert Commissioning Editors. Let them know your intention is to publish your content open access.

  3. Step 3: Editorial process and board decision

Like our traditional publishing, your open access book proposal will be evaluated by the subject editor then peer-reviewed by respected academic specialists who provide independent advice on the content, quality, and potential market for a finished book. If peer reviews are positive, the subject editor will take the book proposal to an internal editorial meeting for consideration.

  4. Step 4: Sign your contract

If your proposal is accepted, you will be issued a contract specifically designed for open access publications. Once the contract is approved, the invoice for the Book Publishing Charge (BPC) will be issued and expected to be paid before the book moves into production. When the final manuscript is submitted and accepted by the publisher, it will go through the normal Taylor & Francis book production process. For more information on the publishing process, view our publishing guidelines.

  5. Step 5: Book is published open access

Congratulations! You are now a published open access author.

How are open access books funded?

Authors are usually required to pay a book publishing charge (BPC) when publishing an OA book or chapter.

BPCs cover essential publishing services, including:

  • Editorial services & peer review

  • Copyediting, typesetting & eBook conversion

  • Global dissemination & marketing

  • Long-term digital preservation through third parties like Portico and OAPEN

The BPC will need to be paid by the time the final manuscript is submitted to Taylor & Francis for production, unless otherwise agreed. Fortunately, there are many funding options available to help you cover these fees.

Taylor & Francis is committed to supporting researchers worldwide. We offer reduced BPC rates for funders from countries defined by the World Bank as "Low -Income Economies" or "Lower-Middle -Income Economies."
