Air Defense: May 18, 2002

The Pentagon has decided not to build a dedicated missile defense system for warships, and will instead use the existing Aegis radars and Standard-2 Block-4 missiles (designed to stop cruise missiles and aircraft) to stop short range ballistic missiles (under 300 kilometers). The much longer-ranged Standard-3, designed to stop longer ranged ballistic missiles, may also be used in this role.--Stephen V Cole
