made around 1998 in several colours: green, brown, blue, grey, pink, black, red and probably some others.
easily recognizable as a fake, as the
official release was made only in red/blue swirled vinyl.
the sleeve is a bad reproduction, and many
details near the edges are missing or distorted

made in 2005. green, pink vinyl. both colours are slightly marbled. the sleeve and labels have been reprinted. it still has a low print quality and defects as the previous fake issues, but the text is sharper and some details are different, as the

black vinyl. the machine printed matrix looks similar to those on the "utopia" counterfeit 7" of

sliver, and others.
The record has the correct sleeve as officially released, with all of the correct markings (showerhead etc. unlike the many coloured bootlegs later released) and also the correct "Geffen" labels as was officially released. The only two differences are the pressing speed of the vinyl (45rpm as opposed to the official speed of 33 1/3rpm) and the presentation of the matrix on the vinyl.
I picked this particular record up at a garage sale in Melbourne around february 2007.

counterfeit of the
original second pressing (blue cd). a few variations exist. they can be generally recognized from the lower printing quality of the inlays, from the cropped artwork (the showerhead is not visible) and from the matrix.
as for now, no counterfeit has appeared of the
original first pressing (silver cd).
variation
1
lower printing quality on the inlays and cd, the front picture is
cropped at the right and bottom sides.
the
matrix (same text as the original: MADE BY DISCOTRONICS B ** GEFD21711 ** #01) is written in a different and smaller font, and is readable from the playing side, while on the original it is readable from the label side

several variations exist of this counterfeit. they can be generally recognized from the lower printing quality of the inlays and from the matrix. as for now, no counterfeit has appeared with the same matrix as the
original issue

this is very well made, the printing quality is very high and can be recognized as a fake only checking the quality of the
small print on the back side by side with an original. but, if it's not sealed, it can be easily recognized by the different matrix (MVCG 17002). copies have been sold in japanese shops, so for some time it was thought to be an official reissue

other
variations
this item has been counterfeited many times, so other variations exist. the things to check are:
the matrix
the printing quality of inlays and cd
the obi: counterfeits are often cropped at the top or at the bottom
the number of pages of the booklet: in the original they are 4 (8 sides) kept together by two metallic points
the playing side: in the original the recorded part is clearly visible, with small gaps betwen the tracks

the cassette is of the same type of other japanese promo tapes (clear shell) but misses any label. the inlay lists an extra track from
no alternative compilation (sappy), but this compilation was released only in 1993.
The seller had some other Nirvana promo tapes.
text from an ebay auction:
I found this in Bangkok years ago. A track from "no alternative" is listed but it's in fact a load of live tracks. The insert also states "1992 Made in Japan".
