本日、晴れて学位を授与された皆さんの修了を、長崎大学の教職員を代表して心よりお祝い申し上げますとともに、皆さんがこれまでに費やした努力、時間、そして情熱に対し、心からの敬意を表します。また、ご列席の指導教員、ご家族や友人、そして支えてくださったすべての方々にも、深く感謝申し上げます。
長崎大学はアクションプラン2024の中で、プラネタリーヘルスの実現に貢献する大学になるためのキーワードとして「学びと研究の融合」を掲げています。
本来、研究力は高度な教育を支え、高度な教育は先駆的な研究を推進するという相互補完関係にあります。その二つを一体化させることにより、単なる知識の習得や研究の追求にとどまらず、実践的な知識と理論的な理解を深め、問題解決のための創造的なアプローチを育むことが可能となります。
皆さんは、大学院での研究を通じて、データを収集し、分析し、結論を導くプロセスを学びました。このプロセスは、これから新たな職場や社会で直面するさまざまな課題に対しても応用できます。すなわち、これまで皆さんが大学院で学んだことは、単に知識の習得だけにとどまらず、複雑な問題を発見し、解決するためのリサーチマインドを醸成してきたと言えるでしょう。
リサーチマインドとは、探求心と好奇心を持ち続け、未知の世界に挑戦し、新たな知識を追求する姿勢です。問題に対して時に批判的に考え、論理的にアプローチする能力です。これらのスキルと態度は、学術の世界だけでなく、あらゆる分野で価値があります。
リサーチマインドは、自己成長を促進します。継続的な学びを追求することで、皆さんは常に新しい視点を持ち、柔軟に対応できる力を持つことができます。これは、変化の激しい現代社会において、自らも変化していくための非常に重要なスキルなのです。
そして、リサーチマインドは、社会の成長に貢献するための強力なツールでもあります。科学、技術、ビジネス、教育、医療など、どの分野においても、人々の生活を豊かにし、社会の成長のフロンティアを切り開く原動力となります。
皆さんが今日手にした学位は、その努力と成果の証です。しかし、それは終わりではなく、新たな旅の始まりです。皆さんのそれぞれのリサーチマインドをもって、未知の世界に挑戦し、自己の限界を超え続けてください。
最後に、皆さんに心からのエールを送ります。これからも、長崎大学は皆さんをずっと応援し続けます。共に歩んできた仲間たちとの絆を大切にし、未来への挑戦を楽しんでください。皆さんの素晴らしい未来を心から祈っています。

President’s Address at the AY2024 Autumn Diploma Conferral Ceremony

On behalf of the faculty and staff of Nagasaki University, I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to all of you who have been awarded your degrees today. As you celebrate this significant milestone, I want to express my deepest respect for your effort, time, and passion that you have put into this achievement. In addition, I would also like to express my deepest appreciation to your academic advisers, families, friends, and all the others who have supported you along the way.
Our Action Plan 2024 emphasizes the “integration of learning and research” as a guiding principle for transforming Nagasaki University into an institution that contributes to the realization of planetary health.
As its core, research and education are essentially interconnected – research underpins advanced education, while advanced education drives pioneering research. The integration of these two elements will lead not only to the acquisition of knowledge and pursuit of research, but also to a deeper understanding of practical knowledge, theoretical understanding, and to the development of creative approaches to solving problems.
By engaging in your research at graduate school, you have learned the process of collecting data, analyzing it, and drawing conclusions. These are valuable skills, and you can apply this process to various challenges you might face from now on in your new workplaces or communities. In other words, what you have learned at the graduate school so far goes beyond acquiring knowledge; it has cultivated a research mindset that empowers you to discover and solve complex problems.
A research mindset is an attitude that makes you remain inquisitive and curious, encourages you to take on the challenge of the unknown, and drives your pursuit of new knowledge. It is the ability to think critically based on the situation and to approach problems logically. These skills and this mindset are valuable in any field, not just in academia.
Furthermore, a research mindset promotes self-growth. By pursuing continuous learning, you will always gain new perspectives and adapt flexibly to change. This is a very important skill, enabling you to reorient yourself in today's rapidly changing society.
In addition to personal growth, a research mindset is also a powerful tool for contributing to the growth of society. Whether in science, technology, business, education, or medicine, it will serve as a driving force that enriches people's lives and opens up new frontiers for social growth.
The degrees that you have earned today are a testament of your hard work and achievements. However, remember that this is not an ending, but the beginning of a new journey. I hope that with your own individual research mindset, you will take on the challenge of the unknown and continue to exceed your own limits.
As I conclude, I offer my heartfelt encouragement to all of you. Nagasaki University will continue to support you. Cherish the bonds you have built with the friends and colleagues, and embrace all the challenges that line ahead. I sincerely wish you all a wonderful future.
