Patchwork

More sounds from creative readers; this month LA meets FM as the Roland D50 and Yamaha CX5 are the favoured instruments.

If you're still waiting to see your particular synth featured in these pages, then why not be the first to submit some sounds?

Don't forget that if your patch gets published, you'll receive a free year's subscription to MUSIC TECHNOLOGY with our compliments. So send us your favourite sounds on a photocopy of an owner's manual chart (along with a blank one for artwork purposes) accompanied by a short demo-tape (don't worry too much about classic performances and impeccable recording quality; just present your sounds simply and concisely - and convince us you're the best of the bunch). Include a decent-length description of your sound and its musical purpose in life, and write your full name and address on each chart. And remember, edited presets are all very well, but an original masterpiece is always preferable. OK?

The address to send sounds to: Patchwork, MUSIC TECHNOLOGY, Alexander House, 1 Milton Road, Cambridge, CB4 1UY.

YAMAHA CX5 - Emutar & Orchime

Rudi Cazeaux, Whitstable, Kent

We think these are the best of the four useful patches Rudi sent, the first, 'Emutar', being a "steelish-guitarish sound inspired by an Emulator II demo disk". As well as being very easy on the ear, it has a convincingly guitar-like attack. The second patch, 'Orchime', is described by Rudi as "a strong orchestral sound, very powerful at the lower end". As the name suggests, it has some intriguing bell-like tones over a lush string base.

ROLAND D50 - Power Synth

Tony Tory, Cirencester, Glos

According to Tony, this "gives a really raunchy, sizzling, powerful sound for slow or fast work", and he suggests using a hint of the D50 preset 'Resin Bow' in the lower register to enhance the bass. Although he's been using this sound for a couple of months he only sent it in to us when he "got round to reading the fine print about free subs!"

Article Files

Can you provide audio examples and/or preset files for any of the patches in this article? More Info

Patch Files

For all the patch charts published in these magazines, we'd like to get audio demos, and if possible, sysex files, or plugin presets, so users can easily preview the patches alongside the chart and download them for their synths, without having to transcribe them first.

So, it would be helpful for the hardware we don't own, if others could transcribe some patches, and create a short audio demo of the patch, and if possible, sysex and/or plugin preset files for those patches, and upload them using the form on the articles featuring those patches.

Audio previews:
Max 4MB, preferably 5-20 secs in length, MP3 format only. You can make previews using the original hardware, and/or plugin emulations. Let us know what they are in the comments of your upload.

Sysex files:
Zipped *.syx files, containing just the patch entry (or entries) for one patch listing.

Plugin presets:
Many synths have plugin emulations which can recreate or import sounds from the hardware. Zip up a file of the formats you can generate, and let us know which instruments they are for in the comments of your upload. Host/DAW files such as FXB/FXP and AUpreset are fine, as are proprietry file formats for particular plugins. The more formats we can provide, the more useful the files are. If you can just download some patches and create some formats we don't already have and upload them, that's also helpful.

We'll be transcribing and providing what we can, but we'd be grateful for people who'd like to help with this - thanks!

Thanks for the upload!

Your upload will be checked and once verified will be added to this page - we'll notify you when your upload goes live. You may continue to add more files if you'd like.

Thanks for helping us add value to the archive!

Upload Error

Oh no, something didn't work out!

Should be left alone:

Note: Your uploads will be checked and you'll be notified when they go live.
