The Information Technology Laboratory (ITL) is one of NIST’s six research laboratories. ITL’s mission is to cultivate trust in information technology and metrology and to serve as a trusted source of rigorous, independent, and unbiased research and data.
Globally recognized and trusted, ITL delivers high-quality, unbiased data and insights backed by world-class measurement and testing facilities. ITL’s work in IT measurement, testing, evaluation, standards engagement, and technical analysis spans across several critical domains—including biometrics, artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, privacy, mathematics, quantum information research, and statistical engineering.
This non-regulatory role, along with ITL’s deep technical expertise in all fields of information technology, helps increase trust in IT worldwide.

Chris Celi of ITL's Computer Security Division was presented with the Pinnacle of Innovation Award at the 2026 Cryptographic Module User Forum Awards Ceremony for his work on CMVP automation.
Lily Chen was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Cryptographic Module User Forum for her work in the landmark post-quantum cryptography standards: FIPS 203, FIPS 204, and FIPS 205.
