WHAT IS OSTEOPOROSIS?
Osteoporosis is a disease which makes bones weak and fragile. This greatly increases the risk of breaking a bone even after a minor fall or bump. The disease has no obvious symptoms, so many people don’t know they have osteoporosis until they suffer a fracture. Fractures can be life-altering, causing pain, disability and loss of independence. That’s why it’s important to prevent osteoporosis!

OSTEOPOROSIS & FRACTURE RISK COMMUNICATION TOOL
IOF and BHOF have developed a clear and simple tool aiming to help primary care providers initiate a dialogue with their patients about osteoporosis and fracture risk. It is intended to be used during medical consultations to improve patients’ understanding of their condition and provide them with essential information about anti-osteoporosis medications and their relative risks and benefits.
LIFT OFF FOR BONE HEALTH CAMPAIGN
ESA astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti is passionate about bone health and women’s health. During her journey in the ISS in 2022, Samantha reminded us about the importance of weight-bearing and muscle-strengthening exercises as the key to maintaining strong bones and muscles throughout life, and to help prevent falls as we age. This is especially important for women at menopause! The rapid bone loss astronauts experience in space's conditions of microgravity is similar to the rapid loss of bone mass that occurs in post-menopausal women on earth.

SCOPE'21
The Scorecard for Osteoporosis in Europe (SCOPE) aims to raise awareness of osteoporosis care in Europe and permits an in-depth comparison of the quality of care of osteoporosis across the region.
It shows that osteoporosis is a major health care burden, resulting in enormous, and growing, costs to national health care systems.
