University of Dundee
On this course, you’ll study structural and functional anatomy. We use Thiel embalmed cadavers giving a first-class anatomical learning experience.
The intercalated BMSc course is aimed at those who have completed three years of an undergraduate medical course or two years of an undergraduate dental course.
The staff in the Centre for Anatomy and Human Identification (CAHID) are amongst the most experienced in the UK in the fields of human identification, forensic anthropology, craniofacial identification and the study of the human body. Staff deliver high quality anatomy teaching at all levels, via whole body dissection which allows students to develop a sound knowledge of the human body.
The Centre was awarded a prestigious Queen's Anniversary Prize for Higher Education in November 2013. Presented in recognition of 'world class excellence', the Queen’s Anniversary Prizes are among the most highly-regarded awards for the UK’s…
University of Glasgow
Anatomy is the scientific study of the human body in relation to its function. Throughout this programme you will explore the scientific principles which underlie clinical investigations into the form, function and development of the human body from early embryological stages into adulthood.
The Anatomical Sciences course for intercalating students runs in parallel with our BSc (honours) and MSci in Anatomy programmes. Most of the teaching is delivered in the form of lectures and tutorials, however, there is great emphasis on all our students to build on this material through further independent learning.
Entry requirements
Applications from external medical and dental students are welcome. Please be aware that we expect admission through this route to be extremely competitive. Applications will be reviewed on their own merits and entrants would be expected to be of a similar standard to those intercalating from within Glasgo…
University of Birmingham
Key Features
• Undergraduate Masters • Increased opportunity for dissection • Close links with local hospitals • Conduct novel clinically relevant research
The intercalated MSci in Clinical Anatomy is a one-year multifaceted programme. The course combines the academic study of anatomy with a practical focus on its influence, impact, and role in the clinical environment.
The importance of anatomy within contemporary clinical medicine has grown substantially, traditionally bound to surgical disciplines, the advancement of both imaging and novel interventions means that, more than ever, medical graduates require a strong grounding in anatomy.
This programme has been developed to allow students to study anatomy in greater depth, specifically in its clinical context, and to provide the platform to further investigate the role of applied anatomy in the understanding and management of disease. Uniquely, this programme allo…
Hull York Medical School
Unlike a basic anatomy course, this programme will allow you to develop a deep understanding of the complex nature of the human body and how that relates to clinical practice – so you can effectively evaluate, diagnose and treat illnesses.
You will also be trained in pedagogical techniques that will equip you with the skills to teach anatomy to students and healthcare professionals in your future medical career.
The programme is built around core dissection-based modules covering the whole body. You will carry out whole-body dissection in small teaching groups during formal dissection sessions, and at your own pace in your own self-directed learning time, using both Thiel embalmed cadavers that ensure material is as close to living tissue as possible, and Formalin embalmed cadavers that keep the material in defined anatomical relationships.
This programme also provides a comprehensive professional education that focuses on…
King's College London
The Anatomy, Developmental & Human Biology Intercalated BSc offers students already on medical degree programmes the opportunity to achieve an additional specialist degree in just one year. This programme will help you develop critical scientific research skills, and gain knowledge of a diverse range of anatomy-related fields. These include developmental biology, cell/ cycle regulations, neural mechanisms, psychology and behavioural science, which reflect the teaching strengths of the department.
Our programme offers a wide choice of taught units, including advanced human anatomy, biology of cancer, developmental neurobiology and psychology/behavioural science. You are also required to complete a compulsory research project, either library-based or experimental, on topics that reflect the research strengths and interests of the department. The requirement means that you will acquire valuable research skills, as well as opportunities to…
Hull York Medical School
The MSc in Clinical Anatomy provides unique opportunities to immerse yourself in the practical and in-depth study of clinical anatomy. The programme is built around core dissection-based modules covering the whole body. You will be encouraged to be a self-directed learner and challenge your knowledge and ways of thinking about the human body.
You will have the unique opportunity to learn from experts in their field who are at the forefront of new developments in clinical anatomy, visiting surgeons and consultants. As well as learning from their expertise, you will be challenged to thi…
University of Bristol
The Functional and Clinical Anatomy intercalated course provides students from professional programmes with a detailed knowledge of human anatomy that is related to function and, ultimately, dysfunction. A major component of the degree is dissection. This programme was instigated in response to student demand and is designed to complement pre-clinical basic science teaching.
In small groups, you will dissect a cadaveric subject and be expected to investigate anatomical variations, pathologies and evidence of procedures present in their subject, building this into an extensive research portfolio. This work will be supported by integrated functional and clinical seminars for each of the regions of the body.
The Advanced Dissection and Research Portfolio units underpin the entire course and dictate which body region is discussed in the associated seminar. Over 24 weeks, you will dissect your subject in small groups, taking note of evi…
University of Manchester
Our BSc Anatomical Sciences course will enable you to study the structure and form of different organisms, including humans, and the relationships between their parts.
You will study structure - from the whole human body to the tissue, cellular and sub-cellular level - and relate this to function in the adult and during embryonic development.
You will also have the opportunity to study the anatomy of other species.
Your theoretical learning will be underpinned by practical experience in our dissecting room facilities .
Continuation onto the modern language, integrated master's or industrial/professional experience course is dependent on certain academic criteria.

Cardiff University
The intercalated year aims to provide a balance between classical anatomical studies and the modern understanding of cell and developmental biology, genetics and disease mechanisms.
You will have the opportunities to spend an academic year in a research-active environment where your learning is aligned closely to the research areas that are very much at the forefront of the advancement in medicine and development of contemporary medical technologies such as tissue engineering.
Entry requirements
The School of Medicine applies certain selection criteria that external students should meet or surpass if they wish to be considered for intercalation. Applicants must have completed Year 3 or Year 4 of their medical degree. This is with the exception of the Emergency, Pre-hospital and Immediate Care Degree where applicants must have completed Year 4 of their medical degree. To have an application considered, an external candidate must …
