We are the joint International Max-Planck Research School (IMPRS) on Astrophysics of

  • the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (MPE)
  • the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics (MPA)
  • the University Observatory Munich at the Ludwig Maximilians University (LMU/USM)
  • the European Southern Observatory (ESO)

Together, we form one of the largest centers of astrophysical research in the world, covering every subject from planets, stars, and galaxies to cosmology. Access to the world's largest telescopes and a stimulating scientific environment provide our students with the ideal conditions for their PhD research.

PhD Position Announcement

We are offering about 25 PhD positions for research topics in various fields of astrophysics with in the IMPRS program. The deadline to apply for IMPRS PhD positions is November 1 every year for the program starting in September of the following year.


Our next application round starts beginning of August, 2025 for the program starting in September 2026. Application deadline is November 1, 2025.


Therefore, the online application portal is temporarily closed but will become available in August 2025. We can notify you as soon as the application portal will be open again. Please send us your email address with a short note that we should enter your name and email on our notification list.

    • The IMPRS Call 2024 is closed!
      Thank you to all interested applicants who have sent their documents within the set time frame. All applications are currently reviewed by the IMPRS selection committee. Until December 23rd all applicants will receive information whether they are sortlisted and invited or not to the IMPRS Recruitment Workshop on Feb 10 -12, 2025.


    • We welcome all our new IMPRS students!
      On September 10 + 11, 2024 our IMPRS Introductory Workshop for the group of 26 new students took place to introduce them to the program and the facilities of our four IMPRS institutes MPA, MPE, ESO, LMU/USM.


    • Congratulations!
      Dr. Elena Hoemann, IMPRS student in 2019-2023, has been granted a doctoral award by the Munich University Society (MUG) for her dissertation, "Merging, fragmentation and collapse of interstellar filaments."

      Dr. Oliver Zier, IMPRS student in 2019-2023, has been awarded with an Otto Hahn Medal 2024.

      Prof. Dr. Reinhard Genzel, IMPRS supervisor and lecturer, has been awarded with the Nobel Prize in Physics 2020, jointly with Andrea Ghez, for the discovery of a supermassive compact object at the centre of our galaxy.
