BOSTON – Three members of the Northeastern women's hockey team were selected in the 2017 National Women's Hockey League (NWHL) Draft on Thursday evening. Senior
McKenna Brand was picked 11th overall by the New York Riveters, senior
Denisa Krizova was selected 13th overall by the Connecticut Whale and senior
Lauren Kelly was drafted 16th overall by the Boston Pride.
Northeastern's three selections set a new program record for the most players taken in a single NWHL draft; the Huskies have now had six total draft picks since the league first conducted an entry draft in 2015.
Brand's impressive junior year caught the eye of the Riveters, who selected the Nevis, Minnesota native with the third pick in the third round – the team's first-ever draft pick from Northeastern. Brand piled up 23 goals and 38 points in 2016-17 and earned First-Team Hockey East All-Star honors. The forward led the team with three shorthanded goals and five game-winners.
Connecticut landed Krizova with the first pick of the fourth round, making her the second NU player to be drafted by the club (
Paige Savage in 2016). A two-time Second-Team Hockey East All-Star, Krizova led the Huskies with 27 assists and 45 points last season, and enters her senior year as the 10th-highest scorer in program history with 139 career points.
Kelly rounded out the Northeastern draft class when her hometown club, the Boston Pride, selected the Watertown native with the fourth pick in the fourth round. Kelly skated in all 37 games last year and notched 10 points on two goals and eight assists.
Northeastern's three total selections in the 2017 NWHL Draft were tied for the most of any school in the nation, joining fellow Hockey East rivals Boston College and Boston University.
