Featured Map: Bombardier CRJ-550
There are numerous examples of aircraft which have minimalist economy cabins, to make room for large premium cabins, including:
There are plenty of others (but not on Ryanair nor Southwest).
Nobody would jump to put the Bombardier CRJ on that list, and yet, the CRJ-550 is a member of that rarefied club, with a 10F, 20Y+, 20Y configuration. The CRJ-550 is an artifact of U.S. scope clauses, which limit the number of aircraft with more than 50 seats that can be operated by regional partners of major airlines. That led to wide deployment of the 50-seat CRJ-100/200, but these aircraft had a significant disadvantage: only economy (Y) seats.
United addressed that problem with the CRJ-550, launched on 6 February 2019 with an order for 50 aircraft, de-rated versions of the CRJ-700 that were initially operated by GoJet under the United Express brand. SkyWest began operating the CRJ-550 for United in 2024, expanding to operations for Delta (as Delta Connection) later in the year using the same configuration.
Today's Featured Map shows the April 2024 scheduled routes for the CRJ-550 under the Delta banner (red) and United (blues and orange). With the CRJ-550, Delta (Delta Connection) has 11 routes from Minneapolis, six from Detroit, and five from Salt Lake City. United (United Express) focuses the CRJ-550 on Chicago (O'Hare) (48 routes), with a dozen or so trips from Newark and Washington (Dulles) to spokes, plus trips between the two hubs.
