Species range shifts due to climate change can have significant impacts on ecosystems and human livelihoods. It is therefore imperative to deepen our understanding on range shifts and plan climate-adaptive ecosystem management. In this symposium, we invite Dr. Jonathan Lenoir from France, a leading researcher on the relationships between species distribution and climate. He will present the current situations of species range shifts under climate warming based on BioShifts, a global database of 30,534 observations of velocity of range shifts for 12,415 taxa (20 phyla, 56 classes) from terrestrial and marine ecosystems. Other speakers will further provide talks on the determinants other than isothermal shifts in explaining species range shifts as well as the crucial aspects to consider in future range shift studies for a wide variety of ecosystems and taxa. In the final discussion, we touch on the issues in current range shift studies, implications for ecosystem management, and the potential of microclimate ecology for better-understanding of species range shifts.
