State of Discharge and Treatment of Municipal Solid Waste in FY 2002

A nationwide survey on the state of discharge and treatment of municipal solid waste in FY 2002 (April 1, 2002 - March 31, 2003) was conducted and the results have been summarized as follows. (Figures in parentheses are those of FY 2001.)

State of discharge and treatment

Total amount of discharge
Slight decrease compared to FY 2001.
- Total volume 51.61 million tons (52.10 million tons)
- Per-capita volume 1.111 kg/capita/day (1.124 kg/capita/day)

Treatment
Increase in the total volume of recycled waste and the recycle rate
while decrease in the volume of final disposal.
- Total volume of recycled waste 8.64 million tons (8.25 million tons)
- Reduction by intermediate treatment 36.58 million tons (36.6 million tons)
- Final disposal 9.03 million tons (9.95 million tons)
- Reduction treatment rate 95.7% (94.7%)
- Direct landfill rate 4.3% (5.3%)
- Recycle rate 15.9% (15.0%)

State of waste incineration facilities
Significant decrease in number and decrease in treatment capacity.
- Incineration facilities 1,490 sites (1,680 sites)
- Treatment capacity 198,874 tons/day (202,733 tons/day)
- Incineration facilities utilizing waste heat 1,035 sites (1,090 sites)
- Incineration facilities with power generation 263 sites (236 units)
- Total power generation 1,365 MW (1,246 MW)

State of final disposal sites (as of March 31, 2003)
Decrease in remaining capacity, increase in remaining lifetime.
- Remaining capacity 144.77 million cubic meters (152.61 million cubic meters)
- Remaining lifetime 13.1 years (12.5 years)
