Duel Commander – Banlist

Update possible every Monday
Last update September 30, 2024 – Tamiyo, Inquisitive Student is banned as a commander only.

Cards banned as a Commander only
(playable in your deck)

Banned cards
(you can’t play them in your deck or as your Commander)

Only cards that are playable in sanctioned Magic: The Gathering formats are legal in Commander, and, therefore, in Duel Commander. You can’t play Gold-bordered cards, Silver-bordered cards, Conspiracy Scrolls cards, Square-Cornered cards, Oversized cards, … and all cards that bring a sticker or an Attraction into the game are banned.

This is by far the most fun format! I got into DC a few months ago and I love the speed of the games and the strategic planning that goes into making every deck.
I have been playing magic since 1994, with a few breaks here and there. I have finally found the format that shares similarities to something like vintage, commander, and modern combined into 1 game.
PS I love the banlist here, lots of very not fun to play against cards already banned!

    TAMIYO BANNED, ZERO SURPRISES

Where are the rules for the format? I was watching some games and it appears they don’t have commander damage in french format? This format looks really great, best format in all of magic. You get to play most all of the cards (even the really good ones) and it retains the classic chess element. The 60 card constructed formats lack variety.

It doesnt make any sense that they are so many commander bans within a short period of time, first Raffine and now Eris.
There is nothing wrong with a commander becoming too widely used. What is wrong is not encouriging players to find a way to deal with it. Raffine was not the issue, Sheoldred and many more commanders could easily deal with it. Strong commanders getting banned is giving another strong commander another place in the meta.
Just completely stupid. I’ve met Eris a few times already but I can’t complain, the Duel Commander-format is yet to be discovered but banning too often and too many times also explains why this format won’t establish itself as an sanctional/official format.

They need to reconsider some of the old bans tbh. Some of the old school commanders should not still be on this list as they have not aged well at all… I’d laugh at Ajani getting banned more than Eris though tbf.

    • Taunkai says:

Have you ever played vs eris? Same as ajani or other commander banned? They are banned for being to much oppressive in early game

  5. Balti says:

    Eris needs Ban.

  6. Gandalf says:

    Time to ban aminatou.

  7. Matt says:

    No Necropotence??

  8. Fern says:

There is a lot banned here. Haven‘t played yet but looks like they force people to play aggro vs control. No combos :/ would love to give it a try tho

    • Rowan says:

Gitrog combo is still legal and quite potent. Granted we play a modified variant with 30 life and serra ascendant banned but we follow the list otherwise

    • Rowan says:

You also could run some sort of midrange plan. Phlage, Titan of Fires Fury gets you there with value Boros cards and consistent lightning helixes.

  9. Vitor says:

Time to ban Raffine and Slimefoot as Commander.

    • Martin says:

And what would those two bans achieve exactly? Or what is the issue with those two decks? Both are strong, but so is Boros Doggo, or Atraxa. And banning one strong commander is just going to make another strong commander take its place and the meta will be full of something else.

I think the Raffine ban is nonsense to be honest.
