Izumo-class

Completed at the turn of the 20th century as armored cruisers, both IZUMO and IWATE saw frontline service in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905. The sisters also served in World War I escorting Allied convoys. In 1921, they were rerated as coast defense vessels and served as training ships for the Etajima Naval Academy's cadets. From 1932 to 1942, IZUMO was based in Shanghai as flagship of the China Area Fleet. From 1923 to 1942, IWATE was a training ship. In July 1945, both ships were destroyed at Kure by aircraft of Task Force 38.
