For about a month or so I fought a battle with some persistent comment spammers within the Fraternity Register. These people were obviously running scripts to randomly add hundreds of comments a day with links to various online gaming venues they were trying to promote.
Although I was able to easily identify and remove these comments each day using appropriate MySQL commands to the underlying database, these vandals didn't let up. You wonder why such people would bother. Because their entries were buried in amongst some 5000 entries in the guestbook, no human was ever likely to see them. And because their entries were deleted within a day of being made, it's unlikely their links were ever going to up their rankings on any search engine. But bother they did. So in the end I simply shut down the comments option. After all, in amongst some 5000 fraternity entries at the time, there were only some 300 legitimate comments. Thus it wasn't a feature many people were using or would be likely to miss. Indeed, given that I shut commenting down a month ago and no one has complained, I suspect no one noticed except the comment spammers and myself. Best Regards, Lloyd. _________________ Live Web Sites: Personal (MS FrontPage) |
