On May 19, Melanie Martinez will finally release her debut EP, “Dollhouse,” nearly a year and a half after becoming a finalist on season 3 of “The Voice.” The New York singer-songwriter’s striking first collection of songs will be officially released next week on Atlantic Records, but fans can already hear the EP in full exclusively on Billboard.com:

Martinez thrived on Adam Levine’s team while competing on “The Voice” in 2012, but the 19-year-old’s days of covering Britney Spears songs are long-gone. “Dollhouse’s” first single and title track, which Martinez wrote with Kinetics & One Love (best known for co-penning B.o.B’s smash “Airplanes”), is about a “dysfunctional family hiding behind a picture-perfect façade,” says Martinez. The dark lyrics serve as a jolt to those who thought that Martinez was a cookie-cutter reality show finalist.

“As the first thing I’ve released to the public, I wanted the EP to capture my lyrical point of view and creative aesthetic,” says Martinez. “‘Carousel’ is about my feeling in love with someone and being stuck on the same ride and trying to grab them but I never reach them. ‘Dead To Me’ is the aftermath of ‘Carousel’ and me trying to eliminate that person from my brain, by killing them in my mind. And ‘Bittersweet Tragedy’ sums up the whole relationship, which was definitely bittersweet and there were moments where I was only focusing on the sweet parts but not noticing how sour so much of it was. That is the final song, because it also sums up the whole EP.”
Martinez will be touring the U.S. in support of “Dollhouse,” beginning June 4 at Philadelphia’s World Cafe Live. She has also been writing songs with RoboPop, who has worked with Kesha and Jessie J, among others.
