The Northern Irish racer will drive for P1 Motorsport in place of Austrian Walter Grubmuller, who sustained a back injury in a qualifying accident at the Nurburgring on June 19th.
Carroll has strong links to the Norfolk-based team, having finished runner-up to Nelsinho Piquet in a P1-engineered car in the 2004 British Formula 3 championship.
The 28-year-old, whose most recent race outing was in the Indy Car Series with Andretti Autosport in 2010, has a strong record at the Hungaroring. In 2007, Carroll took victory for Coloni in a GP2 feature race at the Budapest venue.
"Adam Carroll will be driving this weekend," said P1 Motorsport engineer Mike Henderson. "He has done well here in the past, and also drivers coaches with Walter at a lot of the races. He should be a good substitute. He has done some testing with us, but we'll be making him a new seat today.
"Walter has a fractured vertebrate. It is not quite as serious as we first thought, but he can't do anything harsh [like racing] for four to six weeks. We are definitely aiming for a Silverstone return."
Super Nova GP2 driver Fairuz Fauzy will continue in his family Mofaz Racing team's second seat alongside Jake Rosenzweig. The 2009 Formula Renault 3.5 series runner-up claimed a podium on his 2011 debut at the Nurburgring.
