Atlanta Sports Hall of Fame Announces Class of 2015

ATLANTA, GA – Nov 24, 2014 – The Atlanta Sports Hall of Fame will induct five new members at their eleventh annual induction and award ceremony. The class of 2015 will join the 54 members already in the Atlanta Sports Hall of Fame. They will be inducted on Friday, February 6, 2015, at the Buckhead Theater.
The five inductees for the Class of 2015 are:
· Leeman Bennett – Head coach for the Atlanta Falcons from 1977 to 1982. Led Falcons to playoffs three times. In 1977 Bennett's defense became known as the "Grits Blitz" for its ferocious style and allowing just 129 points, a record for a 14-game season. Bennett also has served as chairman of the selection committee for the Peach Bowl, and currently is on the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl Board.
· Dale Ellis – Collected 1,710 points and 989 rebounds as an All-American at Marietta High School in the 1970s. Three-time All-SEC at the University of Tennessee. Ellis played in the NBA from 1983 to 2000. He retired with 19,004 points, 4,201 rebounds, 974 steals, and 1,719 3-pointers.
· Al Mead – Attended Morehouse College. Won Gold-medal with world record long jump in the 1988 Seoul Paralympic Games. Co-captain of the 1992 USA Olympic team, and Silver medalist at the 1992 Barcelona Paralympic Games. Former world record holder in the 100 meter dash, high jump, and long jump. Mead served as Vice Chairman of Board for 1996 Atlanta Paralympic Organizing Committee.
· George Morris – Played football for Coach Bobby Dodd at Georgia Tech in early 1950s. Morris was the 1952 Tech football captain and led the Jackets to a perfect 12-game season, climaxed by a 24-7 triumph over Mississippi in the Sugar Bowl. Morris also was a SEC Football head linesman official for over 20 years.

· Charlie Yates – A graduate of Atlanta’s Boys High School and Georgia Tech, Yates won multiple golf championship as an amateur including: Georgia Amateur (1931 and ’32), NCAA individual title (1934), Western Amateur (1935), and British Amateur (1938). Yates played in the first Masters in 1934, and was the low scoring Masters amateur five times.
The Awards and Induction Ceremonies for the class of 2015 will be held, Friday, February 6, 2015, at the Buckhead Theater. The evening’s festivities, which include a reception, silent auction and a parade of past inductees, concludes with the awards and induction ceremony.

Ted Turner
Owner of the Atlanta Braves and the Atlanta Hawks.
Created the Goodwill Games. Won the 1977 America’s Cup.

Ron Bradley
1). Ronald Bradley (Coaching) -A three-sport star and 1953 graduate of Avondale High School in DeKalb County
-Played varsity basketball three years, and varsity baseball four years at UGA. His senior
year he was elected as a Most Valuable Player (baseball) by his teammates. He helped lead
UGA to the SEC Championship in 1954 and an SEC Runner Up in 1955.
-Coach Bradley retired in 2010 w/ a record of 1,019-322 in boys basketball and 353-91 in
girls basketball
- His 1,019 victories in boys basketball ranks eighth all-time nationally
-Also coached football (130-69-6) and baseball (158-60)
- Coached 23 other varsity teams in golf, tennis and track
-Ronald M. Bradley Gymnasium in Covington, GA, named in his honor in 2000
-While at Newton County High School, established a national record by winning 129
consecutive home basketball games from Dec. 11, 1959 until Dec. 28, 1967
Steve Lundquist
2). Steve Lundquist (Swimming) -Graduated from Jonesboro High School in Clayton County in 1979
-Won the 100-meter breaststroke and the 400-meter medley relay at the 1984 Summer
Olympics in Los Angeles
-Was the first swimmer to break two minutes in the 200-yard breaststroke
-Won every 100-yard breaststroke event he entered from 1980 to 1983
- Voted America’s top breast stroker of the century by US Swimming
- Lundquist Aquatic Center named in his honor in Jonesboro, Ga

Earl Mann
3). Earl Mann (Owner/Administrator) - Born in Riverdale, Georgia graduated from Tech High School, and attended Oglethorpe University in Atlanta
-Started off as a peanut vendor for the Atlanta Crackers at Ponce De Leon Park in 1916,
became the Cracker’s GM in 1933, and then President and Owner of the Crackers
-Called “Mr Atlanta Baseball”
-Mann fashioned the Crackers into a model for all baseball, the team won 10 pennants
during his tenure and was known “As the Yankees of the Minor Leagues”
-Instrumental in bringing the Braves to Atlanta

Dr. Homer Rice
4). Dr. Homer Rice (Administrator) -Georgia Tech Athletic Director from 1980 to 1997
-Left a legacy of impressive athletics facilities, successful sports, big-name coaches and
successful student-athletes at Georgia Tech
-Developed the acclaimed “Total Person Concept” in the 1980s and used it at Georgia Tech
to mold a generation of athletes who excelled in the classroom, on the field and in life. It has
served as the model for more than 170 schools around the country and is the basis of the
NCAA "CHAMPS" program
-Transformed Ga Tech’s campus in preparation for the 1996 Olympic Games
Deion Sanders
5). Deion Sanders (Multi Sport) -Was the fifth pick overall in the 1989 NFL Draft by the Atlanta Falcons
-Returned a punt for a touchdown in his first NFL game with the Falcons
-Over his five years with the Falcons he intercepted 24 passes, and found his way to the end
zone ten times (three defensive, three kick returns, two punt returns, and two receptions)
-Also played 4 years for the Atlanta Braves in the 1990s, and during his most productive
year in the majors, the 1992 season, he hit .304 for the team, stole 26 bases, and led the NL
with 14 triples in 97 games
-During the 1989 MLB season, he hit a major league home run and scored a touchdown in
the NFL in the same week, the only player ever to do so
-The only man to play in both a Super Bowl and a World Series
-Played 14 years in NFL & Inducted into Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2011
