1921年8月23日ニューヨーク生まれ。スタンフォード大学名誉教授。1957年、40歳以下の優秀な若手研究者に贈られる ジョン・ベイツ・クラーク・メダルを獲得。1972年に厚生経済学への顕著な貢献を認められて、John R. Hicksとともに ノーベル経済学賞を受賞。一般均衡の存在や安定性に関する研究、情報の不完全性に関する研究、社会的選択理論の創出などといった 20世紀の経済理論において最も重要な貢献を為してきた経済学者の一人。
