A couple in the future might want their child to have two copies of a gene associated with musical talent, but to lose one that conferred greater susceptibility to environmental cancer. Other couples would have their own individual agendas. No central planning by any controlling board on behalf of the entire population would be involved, and variety would be as likely to increase as decrease. The question of which changes would provide "better" human beings would be left for each to decide, and the answers would vary, as individual life-styles do today." 「会社側は採用を決定する前に、応募者のDNAシークェンスを調べるかもしれない。そして、健康保険の費用を節約するために、ガンにかかりやすい人間の採用は見合せるかもしれない」(Shapiro[1991=1993:255]。筆者はこうした可能性に言及しつつ、法的に禁止しても個人のDNA情報を調べることは容易であり、「DNA情報はいずれ漏れてしまうだろう。私たちのDNAシークェンスは原則的には個人のものだが、むしろ、かくさない方がよいということになるだろう」とし、行動、人格、能力などは生まれつき決まっていないこと、遺伝子の違いは民族の違いと対応しない部分がむしろ大きいから民族間の相違という感覚を後退させるだろうこと等を述べて、「DNAの知識によって脅かされるのは、無知と恐怖だけだと思いたい。」(Shapiro[1991=1993:257-261])と結ぶ。最初に引用した部分はいつの間にか忘れられ、個人のDNA情報が知られることは問題がない、あるいはよいことだとされているのである。)
