Frament | 55k | Namesake
Paul Stanley Frament was born 4 February 1919 at Cohoes, N.Y. He graduated from Keveny Memorial Academy before entering Albany College of Pharmacy and graduating in 1939. He enlisted in the Naval Reserve 29 December 1941 soon after Pearl Harbor and in January 1942, reported for training as a pharmacist痴 mate. He was posted to the First Marine Division being organized for the Solomon痴 invasion. He landed in the first wave on 7 August 1942. Frament痴 battalion was engaged in an offensive action 3 November 1942. During the fighting he rushed to a Marine and tended his wounds while ignoring the Japanese snipers shooting at him. Later in the battle, he ignored mortar fire to provide aid to other wounded men and in doing so was knocked unconscious by a close explosion. He was evacuated to the rear but the following morning secured his own release and returned to his unit. Frament was again under fire tending wounded on 10 November. Two days later he was wounded by naval gunfire and died of his wounds on 19 November 1942. Pharmacist's Mate Third Class Frament was posthumously awarded the Silver Star for his fearless devotion to duty in tending Marines on Guadalcanal while under fire.Photo courtesy of Dr. Dennis B.
