Robert Slimbach, based on Nicolas Jenson
Like Bruce Rogers’ Centaur and Ronald Arnholm’s Legacy, Robert Slimbach’s Adobe Jenson is based on late-15th century types by the printer Nicolas Jenson; it is in my opinion the most successful in digital form. Jenson breathes the Venetian Renaissance: in its humanist strokes, low contrast and harmonious proportions lay scribal ideals. Despite a strong presence of the broadnib pen, it is a stately, quietly complicated font of supreme elegance.
Jenson is available as a multiple master font, which adjusts stroke weight and counter space as size is adjusted: larger text takes on a lighter stroke, and letterspacing is reduced.
