Earthquake Hazards Page
The main page for the USGS Earthquake Hazards Program. See recent quakes, access shake maps, read about ongoing research, and find learning and education materials.
1906 Ground Motion Simulations
Simulations from new computer models recreating ground motion from the 1906 earthquake. These quicktime movies show how ground moved on the two sides of the San Andreas fault and how seismic waves radiated away from the fault to produce the shaking.
Earth Science Photographic Archive
Provides free access to non-copyrighted photographs from the USGS archive. The collection consists of over 29,500 photos ranging in age from 1868 through 1992, with emphasis on geology, earthquake damage, National Monuments, pioneer photographers (like W.H. Jackson, J.K. Hillers, T.H. O'Sullivan, and others), 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption, and Mines, Mills, and Quarries. Included is a wide variety of 1906 earthquake damage photographs taken by G.K. Gilbert, H. Degenkolb, R.B. Marshall and W.C. Mendenhall, among others.
1906 San Francisco Earthquake and Fire Visualizations
This collection of links to images, films, panoramas, and animations of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and its aftermath is offered through On the Cutting Edge, part of the SERC website helping geoscience faculty stay up-to-date with both geoscience research and teaching methods.
SDSC has produced a variety of visualizations for the Southern California Earthquake Center (SCEC). Includes simulations of the impact different magnitude earthquakes would have on the Los Angeles area.
