I am writing a xen-based driver. At the backend, I used balloon_alloc_empty_page_range() to allocate multiple pages and maped some pages from the frontend. But when I wrote into the page allocated with balloon_alloc_empty_page_range(), I got memory error. However, after I changed balloon_alloc_empty_page_range() to alloc_pages(). It works for me.

What's the difference between balloon_alloc_empty_page_range() and alloc_pages()? Lookslike balloon_alloc_empty_page_range() allocates pages at low memory, right? Is this the only difference?
