Clever Weasel is Clever
Agent Weasel entered the Science Fair at her school this year. Her project was a reasonably complex one:
Grow mustard seeds in varying concentrations of copper sulphate solution
Harvest the leaves and take photos of them against a white background
Write a Python script to examine the photos and correlate the colour of the leaves with the copper concentration they were grown in
Produce the result as an infographic
Do some analysis of the results to see if it fit the hypothesis (that different copper contents in the growth medium affects leaf colour)
Further complexity was added due to her needing to learn Python first!
She won her school competition (yay!) and went on to the regional finals. Where, while she didn't win Best in Show (we initially thought she had due to a misunderstanding on her teacher's part), she did win:
A Computer Science University of Otago Award
An Otago Polytechnic School of Information Technology Award
A New Zealand Statistical Award
A Premier Award (one of six given)
and
The New Zealand Marine Studies Centre Future Scientist - Gifted and Talented Award
In addition, she was the top Year 7 in the competition (which was open to Year 7 and Year 8 students).
Needless to say we are very pleased and very proud parents! We know how hard the Weasel worked for this result, and are glad her efforts have borne such fruit.
Anyone interested in a PDF of her work, please e-mail.
