I finally took the plunge and got a FT-950. I use a Heil BM-10 or Heil Pro
Micro with the HC-4 element. With my older FT-980's I run the processor set
to 1PM all the time and there is no mic equalizer to fool with. Back in
2005 I had the FT-920 that I used on 6 meters. I set the equalizer as per
instructions and the audio was very thin. Per help from a W9 I turned off
the equalizer and set the audio to + 250 hz base.
The FT-950 I started with no equalizer and turning on the processor and
setting the compression level the audio sounded good but I dislike the
flashing eq light. I set the audio to +300 hz base (turning off the light)
and I cannot tell by ear any difference. I have an outboard DVK and using a
dummy load I tested the mic quality and cannot tell any difference between
all mic citcuits off and +300 hz base.
My main operation is Dxing so have no need for flat response audio. I need
some ideas to test.
