mike,
good idea, however remember those "tube protectors" are made of stiff hard cardboard and can scuff the front panel. also... i always remove rear fuses and the fuse cap. they break off easily. i tape them somewhere in the box where they wont impact the rig in the event of drop.

The template works, but an el-cheapo and very effective way to protect the
knobs and the components behind them is to put an appropriately sized piece
of cardboard mailing tube around each, with the tube an inch or so longer
than the projection of the knob from the panel. Ditto for SO-239 and "N"
jacks on the front and back, for meters, for binding posts, especially for
the terribly fragile levers on the ITT-Mackay 3020,and for anything else
that sticks out and might need to be protected. Tack 'em all down with
masking tape or ductus magicus.
This is the way Rick Mish shipped my R-390, inside the fastpack double
boxes, each of tri-wall cardboard, with an inch or two of foam between the
boxes. It was in absolutely perfect condition when FedEx delivered it.
