I had the same thing happen to my FT-1000D a few years ago.
It can be fixed, but you have to remove the VFO Encoder from
the front panel. Swing down/open the front panel, remove the knob, and then
remove the encoder. Spray some WD40 onto the shaft where it enters
the encoder. Try turning the shaft. If loose, spray a little more at the
same spot and turn the shaft. If the shaft doesn't turn, put a lamp
near the encoder and warm it up. Then try the WD40 again.
The bearings stick or get some crud in there and jam up ....
