This is a very common problem with the 857 and 857D: the soft conductive
material that should make contact with the contacts on the display aren't
quite doing the job. I had it on my 857D (it improved after W5DNA dropped
the display head in a quart of iced tea!) and my 857.
If you're careful, you can take the head apart and squish the foam gently
to try to make it work better.
