I've had great luck with Fedex Ground. Less aggrevation, more dropoff locations, great online system, faster, and on average 25% cheaper than UPS Ground.
Maybe they did you a favor by loosing it. Anotherwords, it may have gotten damaged, but I bet your claim was paid much faster by being lost than if it was found damaged.
I had a few friends that were supervisors at UPS. Their "rule" was to deny ALL claims the first time around, and give the customer the runaround until they give up, or until the customer makes enough noise to warrant the supervisor to settle the claim.
I went thru the similar story below years ago with a TS940 years ago. The rear heatsink of the radio was bashed in. The first response to my claim was that I didn't pack the radio properly. The UPS person went so far as to lie and state that they visited the recipient's location to inspect the radio. They claimed the packing was insufficient. I asked them to come and visit the shipping department of my employer (we had an entire department, which shipped dozens of large items daily) so as to verify our procedures. Once confronted, they recanted their statement, then requested that the unit be shipped back to my location, and then scheduled a visit to my location to inspect the radio. After two no-shows, and many not-so-polite phone calls, they finally agreed to pay out. That took another 30 days to receive a check.
