[Yaesu] FT-757GX CAT question

I just purchased an FT-757GX with hopes of controlling the rig with my
computer. I find that most hardware/software will work only with the
FT-757GXII.
In my search and in an effort to avoid purchasing an FIF-232C interface,
which can still be pretty expensive, I have found only one reference to
controlling the '757GX. This was in a QST article on building a MAX-232
interface from February, 1993, where it says that the '757GX uses only
the RxD commands from the PC and sends no confirming data back (except
independent band-select data). The Yaesu documentation is unhelpful in
making this determination but it appears that the RxD line form the
interface is just hooked to the "REM" pin on the little 3-pin header at
the back of the rig. Can anyone verify if the information I have
gathered is correct?
