Hi Mike,
There are a couple of things you can check. Firstly, you can try disengaging
the autotuner, selecting the 1.8 or 3.5 MHz range and transmitting into a
dummy load at 1 kW and also at 500W with the [LOW] key operated. If the
Quadra passes this test, the PA stage is OK.
The next step is to activate the autotuner, press the [TUNE] key and verify
that the Quadra keys the exciter. If the exciter is not keyed (Band Data 2
cable disconnected or exciter PTT input faulty) or if the drive power is
less than 75W, the ERROR message will appear immediately when the [TUNE] key
is pressed. 
I do not know what exciter you are using. Interfacing information for
various non-Yaesu and Yaesu exciters is provided on my Quadra page.

The "excessive DC" error (I assume it is error code 1005) may be due to an
EMC issue caused by the fact that the autotuner is grossly mistuned when RF
power is applied. The fact that it does not occur with a dummy load suggests
this.

Need some help gents ... suddenly my VL-1000 stopped tuning any antenna on
the outputs ... I get an immediate ERROR when I hit the tune button. 
 Also get an imtermittant Hi SWP error "SWR >3:1" and once in a while I see
an excessive DC error when the amp starts ... this is almost always on 80 or
160 meters. Trying the tuner into a dummy load also gets the ERROR failure
but I don't see any of the other issues ... especiallly the excessive DC
error when I transmai into the dummy load.
We've had a ton of rain and ice over the past few days but I'm not sure that
would cause the issues I am seeing ... the Windom is still up in the air so
it's not a downed antenna ...
anyone else experienced this with a Quadra?
