After getting a couple of messages from list members on this topic I remembered that I had a couple of aftermarket HT antennas that I could try with my VX-2R to see if they did a better job of receiving than the short Comet antenna I was using. One was a telescoping whip antenna for 2m (1/2 wave when extended, I think) and the other was a dual band antenna about 18" long, both made by MFJ. Both of these antennas vastly improved the reception on AM and on shortwave. I was surprised by the number of stations I could pull in using either of these two antennas. The telescoping whip, when extended, worked best (no surprise there).
Just thought I'd share my experience, in case anybody was interested.
